Brigadoon and Huron Park are two popular communities in Kitchener’s south west, bounded by Bleams, Fischer Hallman and Pioneer Park to the east. These suburban neighbourhoods are close to the 401 via Homer Watson making them ideal for commuting. Expressway access going north is good too. There’s public transit but it will be slow due to the southerly location of the area.

Brigadoon is the older of the two as far as residential construction goes. A few of the properties here are as old as the late 60s, with a good chunk built between 1970 and 1990. But building has continued right up to the present day as well. This area is entirely residential and mostly detached homes. Lot size and property style are heavily dependent on age, with some of the older homes sitting on very spacious lots.

Huron Park was entirely an industrial park until residential development began along Huron Rd. not that many years ago. The residential and commercial sections are separated by the Huron Natural Area, a quite beautiful place that I’ve visited many times. Homes in the neighbourhood are typically single detached with the earliest builds starting around 2005. There are townhomes and condos to choose from as well.

Grocery selection is good but there are no stores in the neigbourhoods themselves. There are plenty of local schools, and new ones being built but you’ll need to check by your address as some areas send the kids quite a way to distant schools. This is an issue in the newest developments and will change for the better once more new schools are built.

Nature is an overriding theme. Huron Natural Area, McLennan Park and Homer Watson Park are fantastic. The Activa Sportsplex is perfect for active kids. Be sure to check out Williamsburg and the Sunrise Centre for refreshment and shopping. Don’t forget Doon Valley if you like to golf.
