The Doon South neighbourhood in the south end is one of Kitchener’s newest despite having very deep roots in Waterloo Region. Doon South (and Doon) were the tiny village of Doon, settled in the early 19th century. The village was absorbed by Kitchener years back. This sleepy backwater remained mostly undeveloped until the late 90s.

Doon South has seen an explosion of growth beginning at turn of the century. New builds are underway right now just north of New Dundee Rd. Homes are a mix of towns, condos and single detached at a variety of price points. The more mature sections of Doon South feature the bigger lot sizes you typically see. The oldest parts along Doon Village Rd. still have an almost rural feel.

The neighbourhood an ideal locale for out of town commuters with almost instant access to the 401. Getting to the Conestoga Parkway isn’t too bad either, via Homer Watson or Fischer Hallman. There’s bus public transit but the nearest LRT stop on Fairway is a bit of a distance.

Local attractions include the Waterloo Region Museum, the Activa Sportsplex,  the Homer Watson Gallery and Doon Heritage Village. For nature lovers there’s Topper Woods and the Doon Creek Natural Area running right through the neighbourhood. Doon Valley and Whistle Bear are good places for golf. There’s Chicopee for skiing, snowboarding and zip-lining on the other side of #8.

Despite the relative newness of much of the neighbourhood there’s plenty of choice for groceries and lots of nearby local schools. It’s no surprise that family friendly Doon South is super popular.
